Venice Marathon: The marathon which takes place along the most beautiful and picturesque route in the world
If you are an amateur or professional sportsman, or if you simply enjoy sporting events, you should not miss the Venice Marathon. The event takes place every year, usually on the fourth Sunday of October, so it is an important date to keep in mind when deciding the best time to plan your holiday in Venice. The Venice Marathon starts at Stra and arrives in Venice following a classic itinerary of 42.195 km. The official marathon is recognised globally by the I.A.A.F and has been awarded a Bronze Label. It takes place over a route unlike any other in the world with virtually every kilometre revealing astonishing beauty. It starts from the “Riviera del Brenta” with its magnificent villas and arrives in Venice crossing a pontoon bridge to Piazza San Marco, the Bell Tower and the Doge’s Palace. The 10k race is the most picturesque 10km race in the world and takes place over the last ten kilometres of the Venice Marathon route.
This race gives everyone the chance to experience the extraordinary charm of the lagoon city at close quarters. If you are a family, you can all take part as Family Runs and non competitive races are organised in various localities in the surrounding area to involve children, teenagers and adults in a fun filled atmosphere. An important element of the Venice Marathon is its strong support for charity and to this end there is a Venicemarathon Charity Program which has the celebrity endorsement of the paralympic athlete, Alex Zanardi.
In the days running up to the competition, a sport and leisure fair, Exposport, is held in the San Giuliano park in Mestre and this is the real heart of the Venice Marathon. The Venice Marathon is generally a combination of events which culminate in the marathon itself. The events involve and inspire both young and old in a festive and fun atmosphere.
