Apartments for Venice’s famous regatta
APARTMENTS FOR VENICE’S FAMOUS REGATTA
An unforgettable occasion with traditional boats and actors re-invoking important “characters” from Venice’s past
Venice is famous for its monuments and churches of
inestimable artistic and cultural value and for its majestic buildings, romantic
views and unforgettable rides in gondolas.
But Venice is also much more than this.
It draws tourists from all over the world for its unique ancient
traditions which the Venetians cherish and celebrate in great style. One such case is the world famous historic Venice
Regatta which has always attracted crowds of enthusiasts and people who are
simply interested to see it, every September.
If you are planning a holiday in Venice but have not yet decided exactly
when to come, this is the right period for seeing one of the Venetians’ most
cherished festivals. We give our clients
a wide choice of rental apartments located in the main areas of the lagoon city,
both in the centre and further out. It is thought that the first evidence of
rowing competitions dates back to the middle of the 13th century although, in
all likelihood, the competitions date back well before this given that Venice,
being a maritime city, would have had a strong need to train rowing crews. However, the modern regatta as it is known
was first held in 1841 when the city hall took on the responsibility for
organising boat competitions, partly for economic reasons. In 1899, the then mayor of Venice suggested
that it be called the “historic” regatta and that remains its name to this very
day.
Book one of our rental apartments in the San Marco zone and you will be
very close to St Marks Basin and the Grand Canal where you can see many
different types of boat gathering to take part in the historic Regatta and
spectators watching the competitions and rooting for their favoured boat. The festival is a glorious array of
traditional boats, figures in costume and, not least, the best rowers in the
Venetian lagoon challenging each other with verve. Not to be missed is the famous historical
procession which stretches along the Grand Canal before the competitions,
during which you can admire hundreds of traditional 16th century boats which recall
the glorious past of what was one of the most powerful maritime republics in
the Mediterranean.
The lavish costumes
worn by actors impersonating grand figures from the past such as dames, squires,
the Doge and his wife, ambassadors, musicians and all the highest ranking
Venetian officials are also an unmissable sight. Perhaps the most famous and exciting race is
the one on small gondolas (gondolini)
where the winners fly along the Grand Canal to the finishing line by the famous
“machina”, a spectacular floating platform located in front of the Ca’Foscari
palazzo.
